Leo : Review as LCU Fan and Non-Vijay Fan

P/S : I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF THALA (தள) AND THALAPATHY (தளபதி)

I was eagerly waiting for the release of "Leo"(தள) and couldn't miss the opportunity to watch it on the first day at 9 PM at Butterworth Lotus Five Star Cinema (பட்டர்வொர்த் லோட்டஸ் ஃபைவ் சினிமா திரையரங்கு) . The excitement was palpable as the theater was packed with enthusiastic Vijay fans. As I settled into my seat, I grabbed a tub of the famous Lotus Five Star Cinema (பட்டர்வொர்த் லோட்டஸ் ஃபைவ் சினிமா திரையரங்கு)  popcorn and a cup of white coffee, which cost me a reasonable RM11. In my opinion, LF's popcorn is second to none among all the cinema chains in Malaysia.

The movie kicked off on a promising note, and I was immediately impressed by the stunning VFX during the hyena scene. It's evident that the Tamil movie industry is making remarkable strides in technology, proving it can compete with Hollywood. The first half of the film was thoroughly enjoyable, with suspense that had me on the edge of my seat. The action sequences, especially during the initial fight scene at the coffee shop with a 90s retro song as background music, were a treat for the audience.

However, the second half of the film took a somewhat slower turn, with extended flashback scenes that felt a bit draggy and less engaging. The movie would have benefited from maintaining the suspense throughout and not revealing Vijay's (விஜய்) character at all. This would have kept the audience guessing and added an element of surprise.

While the film did include connections to the larger Lokesh Cinematic Universe (லோகேஷ் திரையுலக அண்டம்), it was relatively minimal, primarily involving the character of Constable Napoleon  (கான்ஸ்டபிள் நெப்போலியன்) and a cameo by Kamal Haasan's (கமல்ஹாசன்) voice at the movie's end. I would have appreciated a more intricate interconnection with the LCU to make the movie feel like a more integral part of the universe.

Vijay delivered an outstanding performance, making "Leo" one of his best films to date in my opinion. However, in comparison to other LCU films like "Kaithi" (கைதி) and "Vikram," (விக்ரம்)"Leo" falls slightly short in terms of its overall impact.

In summary, "Leo" is a must-watch for all Vijay fans, with breathtaking VFX, engaging suspense, and thrilling action scenes. Although the film could have benefitted from maintaining suspense till the end and establishing stronger connections within the LCU, it remains a highly enjoyable cinematic experience and another feather in Vijay's cap.

Verdict

3.25 star
